Research
Kathryn Neckerman is the Associate Director of ISERP and of Columbia's Health & Society Scholars Program (H&SS). Neckerman is a sociologist specializing in the study of urban inequality and social policy. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, her research has examined topics including the role of race and ethnicity in urban labor markets, the institutional origins of inner-city schooling, and economic and racial/ethnic disparities in access to healthy neighborhood environments. Neckerman is a member of the interdisciplinary Built Environment and Health research group at Columbia, which is carrying out a series of projects on the health consequences of the urban environment. Among these projects is an NSF-funded study of inequality in neighborhood access to basic retail and services. With Peter Bearman and Leslie Wright, she is editing a series of commissioned research papers on the social and economic consequences of tobacco control policy, funded by the American Legacy Foundation.
