As always, ISERP affiliates and their research have been actively represented in the news media.

  • An op-ed piece on democratic prospects in the Middle East by Lisa Anderson appeared in the Christian Science Monitor on January 5.

  • Peter Bearman's new book Doormen (UChicago Press, 2005) received favorable reviews in the New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, New York Press, Publishers Weekly, and the Financial Times.

  • A September 17 article in the Boston Globe highlighted Rajeev Dehejia and colleagues' research on the role of religious participation on the maintenance of household spending levels following an economic setback.

  • "The Diary of Angelina Jolie and Dr. Jeffery Sachs in Africa," a documentary on the challenges of hunger, disease, and isolation in Africa, aired this fall on MTV. Spending two long days in a small Kenyan village beset by hunger, AIDS, and malaria, Sachs reveals his vision for ending extreme poverty by 2015.

  • Sudhir Venkatesh's documentary on Chicago public housing, [DisLocation]/(www.dislocationfilm.com), was screened as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival this November. The event received news coverage in the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, and the film ran on PBS in Chicago.

  • On October 28, the Economist highlighted an article by Michael Morris and colleagues in Organisational Behavior and Human Decision Processes on how vendors communicate a simple and a complex message in two different media-first via rapid instant messaging, and then via much slower e-mail. They conclude that vendors employing complex arguments via instant messaging gain greater economic advantage over sellers than those using other combinations of medium and message.

  • Ira Katznelson's groundbreaking book, When Affirmative Action was White (W.W. Norton, 2005), was the subject of a conference at Columbia University, which aired on C-SPAN-2. Reviews also appeared in major papers such as the Washington Post and New York Times.

  • DefenseNews reported on Jack Snyder's new research findings, which show that pushing countries into democracy before they are ready could lead to violence. The research was presented at the Cato Institute in January.

  • On October 23, the San Francisco Chronicle featured networks expert Duncan Watts in an article on social networking on the internet.
