The Punishment, Inequality, and Transformation Colloquia is a new interdisciplinary speaker series hosted by Columbia University’s Justice Lab. The series will bring together guest speakers and the Lab’s peer research centers at Columbia to engage in deep discussions about the criminal legal system and efforts to both reform and abolish it. We will invite advocates and academics from around the United States to share their research, policy work, and lived experiences and answer questions in an environment that fosters critical conversations about current work in the field.

It will be a productive space to exchange ideas, with a focus on youth and emerging adult justice; probation, parole, and pre-trial supervision; incarceration; and inequality, racism, and harm. Most colloquia will take the format of speaker presentations followed by questions and answers, but we will also host workshops.

All colloquia will address broader questions about the relationships between research, politics, and progressive change; the role of system actors in research and advocacy; the meaning of community; and the path toward abolition.

We invite you to join the inaugural colloquium on Monday, November 29 from 3 to 4:30PM ET, during which brothers Frankie and Freddy Guzman will discuss their perspectives on California's youth justice system and their efforts to transform it.
