jimi adams holds a PhD in sociology from Ohio State University (2007) where his research focused on social networks and the sociology of religion. His primary interest lies in exploring the ways a social network perspective alters the questions social scientists ask, what we subsequently find, and the implications of those changes. This interest lead to research projects examining the link between religion and infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS. His dissertation work explored the religious networks within which HIV-prevention strategies develop, and the influence of religious affiliation on risk network structure. This work stems from his involvement with two primary data collection projects in rural Malawi. Part of his work as a Health and Society Scholar will continue this focus by examining the importance of religious organizational networks in the production of HIV prevention strategies in other contexts (including one project among Chinese immigrant religious organizations in New York City). Additionally, he plans to pursue the importance of networks in other non-HIV related health outcomes, with a particular interest in examining how racial health inequalities are (re-)produced through network mechanisms that arise from and independently of individual processes. jimi received his B.A. in interdisciplinary studies from Virginia Tech (1998).
