Debbie Barrington received an A.B. in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Princeton University, an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Boston University, and completed her PhD in Epidemiologic Science at the University of Michigan in June, 2005. As a pre-doctoral scholar at the University of MichiganÂ's Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, and Center for Research in Ethnicity, Culture and Health, she has developed research interests in the social epidemiology of reproductive and perinatal outcomes, and in Caribbean-American womenÂ's health. Her dissertation work centers on the socioeconomic conditions of two generations of African-American and White women following U.S. Civil Rights legislation, and examines the contribution of intergenerational socioeconomic factors on present-day racial disparities in infant low birth weight. As a Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society scholar, she intends to further develop these interests through continued exploration of the role the nexus of race/ethnicity, class and gender plays in determining population health within the United States.
