Research Seed Grant | 2006-2007

Civil Society and Crime in Twentieth-Century Mexico

by Pablo Picatto (History)

This seed grant will help build the research toward a historical study of crime in Mexico during the twentieth century. The study will examine criminal practices, public perceptions of crime and social responses to transgression from a perspective centered on the interaction between civil society and the state. Through a critical engagement with the recent literature on crime and justice, an analysis of quantitative evidence, and the use of published, archival and oral sources, this study will offer a comprehensive model to understand a central issue in contemporary Mexican politics.
