The Effect of Home Computer and Internet Use on Educational Outcomes
by Cristian Pop-Eleches (Economics) and Ofer Malamud (Chicago)
This project examines the effect of computer and internet use on the educational outcomes of low-income students in Romania. A unique program administered by the Romanian Ministry of Education has offered about 25,000 vouchers towards the purchase of a personal computer for low-income students enrolled in Romania's public schools. Using administrative data on school performance from the Romanian Ministry of Education as well as data from the proposed pilot survey, Malamud and Pop-Eleches hope to understand the effect of computer and internet use on educational outcomes as well as the mechanisms that may underlie these effects.
