Invisible Families of New York: A Sociological Study of Gay Relationships and Motherhood among Black and Latina Women

by Mignon Moore (Sociology)

This work highlights the intersections of sexuality, race and ethnic identity for African-Americans, Latinas, and women of Caribbean descent, showing how issues of independence and belonging play out in unique ways for gay women of color. It focuses on four areas: 1) Perspectives and experiences with motherhood and co-parenting, 2) Gender roles in lesbian relationships of color, 3) Social class differences among black and Latina lesbian families, 4) Racial and ethnic identity in the context of same-sex intimate relationships. The study consists of surveys and in-depth interviews with black and Latina gay women living in New York who are mothers or in committed relationships with other women.
