Parental Wealth and Transition to Adulthood
by Hsien-Hen Lu (Sociomedical Sciences), Mary Clare Lennon (Sociomedical Sciences), Yuval Elmelech, and Seymour Spilerman (Sociology)
This proposal is for a project to examine the effects of parental wealth and family resources on children's transition to adulthood. We argue that the transition process is crucial to the early social and economic attainments of teenage children and young adults. The project will examine several component transitions early in the life course: educational transitions, the possible occurrence of premarital births, early union formation, and early labor market experience. By formulating a picture of how these transitions occur in time and in relation to one another, this project will develop a research agenda to examine how ascribed and achieved factors influence individual opportunities over the early life course. We intend to continue work on these issues by submitting proposals for research support to various funging agencies.
