Reproductive Rights and Individual Well-Being
by Lena Edlund (Economics) and Rohini Pande (Economics)
The 1960s and early 1970s saw a dramatic change in the set of reproductive rights available to women. It is often claimed that this, in turn, led to the end of the traditional patriarchal household and increased female labor force participation. The proposed project shall provide a theoretical and empirical investigation of how this change in reproductive rights altered women's behavioral choices regarding marriage, child bearing and labor market entry. Further, the project will also examine what repercussions these changes had for men. It shall also examine how, if at all, this phenomenon contributed to the so called "gender gap" in U.S. politics.
