Last month, the respected Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki died in a plane crash. He was overseeing the largest corruption investigation in the country’s history. Even if his recently selected successor, Edson Fachin, rises to the occasion, Zavascki’s death remains a tragic loss and a blow to Brazil’s fight against corruption. Especially since it comes on the heels of lawmakers torpedoing in late 2016 a widely popular effort to make it easier for prosecutors and judges to clean up government.

Social Science Research Council Names Alondra Nelson as Next President

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) has named Alondra Nelson, professor of sociology and dean of social science at Columbia University, as its next president. Nelson, who will begin a five-year term on September 1, 2017, succeeds Ira Katznelson, who has led the 93-year-old organization since 2012.

We are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2017 Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy Seed Grant Awards. The following project proposals demonstrated excellent intellectual merit and the potential to develop new theories, new areas of methodological innovation, and bridge different substantive domains.
