Does Terrorism Work? An Interview with Political Scientist Page Fortna

In her recent paper, “Do Terrorists Win? Rebels' Use of Terrorism and Civil War Outcomes,” Harold Brown Professor of U.S. Foreign and Security Policy and Chair of Political Science Page Fortna questions the effectiveness of terrorism. The paper, published last month in International Organization, has generated an important dialogue about the seemingly simple question at the center of Fortna’s research: does terrorism work?

On the Papal receipt of The Poor and the Perfect: Five Questions with Neslihan Şenocak

In an interesting turn of events this past winter, Associate History Professor, Neslihan Şenocak, found her book in the hands of Pope Francis. Originally from Turkey, and an engineer, Şenocak's path to teach at Columbia was an unconventional, if not destined journey. Underscoring the importance of exposure to scholarship and study outside certain prescribed boundaries, Şenocak describes how an important grant for non-Christians who study Christianity in Rome took her from working as an engineer to studying medieval Franciscan history and eventually to Columbia.

Alondra Nelson's new book The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations and Reconciliation After the Genome was published in January 2016. The book is a "meticulously detailed study" (Kirkus) of how genetic testing is affecting race in America, and has garnered widespread critical praise.
