Archaeology and Archaeometry

The goal of the Archaeology Program is to fund research which furthers anthropologically relevant archaeological knowledge. In accordance with the National Science Foundation’s mission such research has the potential to provide fundamental scientific insight. While within the broad range of “archaeology” the focus is on projects judged to be significant from an anthropological perspective, the Program sets no priorities based on time period, geographic region or specific research topic. The Program administers four competitions each of which is described below.

Archaeology Program Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Awards

The Archaeology Program supports anthropologically relevant archaeological research. This means that the value of the proposed research can be justified within an anthropological context. The Program sets no priorities by either geographic region or time period. It also has no priorities in regard to theoretical orientation or question and it is the responsibility of the applicant to explain convincingly why these are significant and have the potential to contribute to anthropological knowledge.

Turkish Studies Grants

Dissertation Writing Grants support graduate students in the writing stage of the dissertation. Summer Language Study grants are also available.

DeKarman fellowships

DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States. Only candidates for the PhD who will defend their dissertation in or about June 2018 and undergraduates entering their senior year (will receive bachelors degree in or about June 2018) are eligible for consideration for a 2017-2018 fellowship.

Grants Program for US Citizens

The program offers grants to U.S. scholars interested in conducting research on North Africa in any Maghrib country, specifically Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco, or Tunisia. AIMS sponsors three Overseas Research Centers in the region in Oran, Tunis and Tangier and has other institutional affiliations that support AIMS scholars.

Research Grants

Advanced doctoral students (advanced to candidacy – all but dissertation) and established scientists are eligible for Leakey Foundation Research Grants. The Leakey Foundation exclusively funds research related specifically to human origins. Priority of funding is commonly given to exploratory phases of promising new research projects that meet the stated purpose of the Foundation.

Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship

On behalf of Ford Foundation, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will award dissertation fellowships to doctoral candidates who show superior academic achievement and who identify as a member of a minority population historically underrepresented in higher education.
