Security, Society, and the State

The "Security, Society and the State" research programme reflects these contradictory trends. It targets new security-related issues that are prime examples of the post-Cold-War era but have been largely neglected in mainstream research. The programme is intended to encourage junior scholars to pursue unconventional research agendas that are nonetheless crucial, while providing senior scholars with the opportunity to focus intensively on work in progress for a limited period.

Interests: 

An Integrated Online Archive for International History

Enhancing access to declassified governmental and other organizational records by aggregating documents from the Wilson Center Digital Archive, the Archives and Records Management Section of the United Nations (UN), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Archives, and the World Bank Group Archives. The project would make the records available for research on an existing website, the Freedom of Information Archive (FOIArchive), as well as through library catalog systems and an application programming interface

Collaboratory Fellows Fund

The program will award grants to pairs of instructors, one with disciplinary/area expertise and one with data-science/computational expertise, to collaborate on the development and teaching of new material that embeds data or computational science into a more traditional domain or the reverse, embeds business, policy, cultural and ethical topics into the context of a data or computer science curriculum. The new content should use pedagogy, instruction, and delivery methods that are fitting for the specific student cohort.

Humanities War and Peace Initiative

Applications are invited across four primary areas: scholarly collaborations on topics around war and peace, including those that feature work in a global context and involving the Columbia Global Centers; support for scholarship within current structures, where an emphasis on war and peace can transform the nature and outcomes of the work; support for courses that focus on war and peace; support for work beyond academia, involving partnerships with groups or individuals, locally or well beyond; other related projects, as envisioned by applicants.

National Research Competition

National Council for Eurasian and East European Research (NCEEER) invites proposals for its National Research Competition. This competition provides funds for both collaborative and individual research projects in the humanities and social sciences in or on any country of Eurasia or East-Central Europe. The primary scholar on either a collaborative or individual project must be a US citizen and hold a PhD degree. In addition, applicants must have completed any previous NCEEER grants received before they may apply for a new grant.

Humanities Connections

The Humanities Connections grant program seeks to expand the role of the humanities in undergraduate education at two- and four-year institutions. Grants will support innovative curricular approaches that foster productive partnerships among humanities faculty and their counterparts in the social and natural sciences and in pre-service or professional programs (such as business, engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, and other technology-driven fields).

The Emergence of Symbolic Notation and Data Visualization in Algebra and Chemistry

This award supports doctoral dissertation research in history of science that focuses on the use of mathematical and chemical symbolism. Such notation is currently regarded as essential to scientific work. By contrast, for much of Western European history, the use of symbols in science was not regarded as a suitable approach. However, by the nineteenth century, symbolic notation had become ubiquitous. This project's objective is to explain why European scientists came to see symbolic notation as credible during the early modern period.

Cultural Emergency Response

The Prince Claus Fund, through its Cultural Emergency Response programme (CER), and the Whiting Foundation announce a new call for proposals for projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean to safeguard documentary heritage that is acutely threatened by recent conflict or other disaster, whether natural or man-made.

Endangered Archives Programme

The Endangered Archives Programme offers a number of grants every year to individual researchers world-wide to locate vulnerable archival collections, to arrange their transfer wherever possible to a suitable local archival home, and to deliver digital copies into the international research domain via the British Library.
