Universal Access to Knowledge

To harness advances in digital information technology to facilitate the openness and accessibility of all knowledge in the digital age for the widest public benefit under fair and secure conditions.

Scholarly Communication

To empower researchers by supporting the development and adoption of new resources for managing the increasingly diverse array of digital communication channels, enabling scientists to more effectively locate relevant research, network with other researchers, and disseminate their work to the scientific community and the public.

Data & Computational Research

To accelerate scientific discovery by helping researchers fully exploit the opportunities created by recent advances in our ability to collect, transmit, analyze, store, and manipulate data.

Economic Institutions, Behavior, & Performance

Projects in this sub-program study households and individuals, specifically the role of “choice architecture” on their economic decision-making. Research topics include:risk-taking and insurance markets; time inconsistencies and the annuity paradox; cognitive biases; behavioral applications to policy; experimental testing of nudges or other regulatory interventions; behavioral welfare economics; obfuscated markets; consumer finance; probabilities and perceptions of extreme events; behavioral foundations and heterogeneous agents in macroeconomics; etc.

Working Longer

In this multi-disciplinary program, the Foundation seeks proposals for original projects led by outstanding individuals or teams, which exhibit a high degree of methodological rigor, which have a high expected return to society, and for which funding from the private sector, government, or other foundations is not yet widely available.

Sloan Proposal for Stan

To support the development, maintenance, and dissemination of Stan, a probabilistic programming language that simplifies Bayesian modeling and data analysis.

Energy and Environment

The foundation supports research on energy economics, energy resources, energy technology, and energy security.
