Gergely's research studies public policies and the behavior of government using a combination of theoretical and empirical methods. Topics of current interest include civil service rules, nonpayment for public utilities, and the inclusion of “none of the above” options on election ballots. He has worked on, and in, both developed and developing countries, and teaches courses on game theory and political economy.
